There was no place to go but up--into the sun. Mason closed his eyes, prayed to his little sister's gods, for he believed in none of his own, and pushed the giant red "ON" button.

They'd be here soon, with their micro-stunners and their gases that made you care-free. He searched the controls for a weapon, but this wasn't a combat ship. It was a flyer, a long-distance job. Transport. Well, he was was running out of options. And one of those options was direction.

He stumbled over something--a seat, probably--and found the wall, frantically searching until he found the light switch. The glare blinded him for a few moments (moments he didn't have!), but then he saw he was inside a ship. What kind wasn't clear. Suzie was dead. Mason almost gave up, right then, realizing that his purpose in fighting his way here had been removed, not through evil intent, but through a simple accident. But he saw Suzie's eyes, heard her voice, saying "The ridge is waiting, and the heat, and the people with silver eyes. They know what to do." He groped forward through the conduit and suddenly found himself in an open space.

He shut off the inter-news speaker, slid down the wall and was sick.
